'Tis the Season...

Yeah, I know, the "holiday" season is over and done with--although, here in Denver, holiday lights are kept up until the National Western Stock Show is over, on Su 24 Jan 2010 (having begun on Tu 5 Jan 2010).

I have lots of things on my mind, I guess that it's because it is now 2010 a nice round number and it kinda' roooolls off the tongue--two zero, one zero.  And having returned from my annual trip to Bedford TX, listening to that accent, had me remembering growing up in Big Spring, TX.

Therefore, I'm gonna' share with you a story.

Now, a bit of  background my father was raised in Tulsa OK, and had an Oklahoma accent.  My mother was raised all over the states, and Pacific--so she didn't have much of an accent--that I remember.  My father was also a fighter pilot in the Air Force--a "lifer."  So he got stationed at Webb AFB, Big Spring TX around 1964.  We had just lived in Okinawa, where my younger brother and sister were born.

Now, Ah had ben tole that Ah tawlked liik I wuz frum Texas--but Ah new that Ah din't--'cuz Ah din't sae: y'all!  All thoz frum Texas an Oklahoma said: "y'all," an Ah specifickly did NOT sae "y'all."  But Ah kept bein' tole that, Ah sownded lik that,  much to mae suprize!

After movin' tew Texas frum Okinawa, Ah began skoul--third grade, Miz Dudley's klas.  One dae, Mis Dudley tole us to rite our otto-bi-og-ra-fee.  Now, in ma opinyun, Ah haddn't dun mutch.  But Ah did ma best.

Miz Dudley had tole us, in an otto-bi-og-ra-fee, yew began with tellen' where yew were born an sum interestin stuf bout that.  Then yew kud tell sum stuf bout what yew had dun sinse then.  Then yew kud tell bout summtin that wuz intrestin that happened resently.

So, Ah tole bout bein born in Warshington, (but Ah culd nevr remembr if that wuz "dc" or "state"--cuz bein from Okinawa, Ah dint noe the difrence, an Ah kept forgittin the anser).  Ah then tole bout movin tew Texas, an a bit o stuf bout that.  Ah wuz reelly stuk on summin that hapened resently. Ah strugld and strugld, an after much thinkin and stuf, Ah wroat that Ah had fallin doun, an hurt my ebow--E-B-O-W--yew no, that joit betwn yur shulder and rist.

Ah tuk ma papur to Miz Dudley, fur her to luuk ovr.  She sad Ah did goud, but Ah had mispeled "ebow,"  Ah needed tu 'soun it awout!'  Sew Ah went bak to ma desk, an raced e-b-o-w, an rote: E-B-O-W-E! (ya noe--sylent "e"!).  Miz Dudley agin sad noe!?  How bout A-B-O-W?  A-B-O-W-E?

Ah had jus bout raced a whol in ma papur!  Miz Dudley took simpathe on me, an tole me 'ebow' wuz speled: E-L-B-O-W--an Ah thawt when did we get a sylent "L"???!

This is a prime example of why learning to spell phonetically just doesn't work!

Crochet Hook Sizes

Okay
I'm not generally one who snags someone's webpage, but  being that Yahoo! has shut down GeoCities I'm afraid that this information might be lost. I think this is too important to be hiding, and not readily available  to people.  Thank goodness, I though to give the web archive, or wayback machine a try, and I found the page.  But many might not think to do that, or know that there is such a service available.

Crochet Hook Sizes

Note: As you can see, number and letter sizes vary a lot from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some makers, like Susan Bates, have changed their sizes over the years. Most makers are now labelling by millimeters (mm). It's also possible to see two hooks with the same mm label, that are clearly different sizes.
This chart shows the approximate mm sizing (far left column) of number or letter sizes for the most commonly found mass-produced hooks.
bold = steel hooks
brown = pre WWII sizing for ivory, bone, wood hooks

Much of this information came from retailers' and manufacturers' listings. Vintage sizings came from my own collection. Many inconsistancies were resolved with generous help from members of crochetpartners.org.

Who is me?

Hunh??? Who would be interested in reading about what I may or may not have to say? Hells Bells, even my Twitter-time has been minimized.

Oh well. We'll see how this goes and what my interests might be and whether this is worthwhile or not for me.

I suppose something that you might want to know is who is ZoomieJr? And exactly why "ZoomieJr"???

Well, my father was a pilot in the Air Force. He was a "lifer." A slang term for a person in the Air Force, is "zoomie." Being that I am his daughter, I would be a "junior"--I also joined the Air Force (enlisted--Computer Systems Maintenance), so I really qualify as a "jr"! My brother came up with this screen name, and I thought it was great, so since around 2000-ish, I have been ZoomieJr (sometimes ZoomieJunior if "Jr" was taken already).

I am now 53 years old, living in Denver CO since 1991. I'm on disability...and for someone who doesn't work outside my home, I certainly manage to keep myself busy!

Things I do and I'm interested in are:
Crochet
Reading
Genealogy
Computers?Internet
Television (reality shows, and documentaries)
these are what came to mind readily.
